James W. Crawford, III
James W. Crawford, III was appointed President of Felician University by the Board of Trustees on June 25, 2021.
President Crawford currently holds a position on the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) Council of Presidents and is an active member on the boards of the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey (CIANJ), Meadowlands Chamber, and New Jersey’s Higher Education Presidents of Color. President Crawford also serves on the Diocese of Arlington’s Advisory Council on Racism.
Admiral Crawford served for 33 years in the Navy under six Presidents. He was appointed by President Obama as the 43rd Judge Advocate General (JAG) and served as legal counsel to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. President Crawford was the Head of the Naval Legal Service Command and Commander of the NATO Rule of Law Field Support in Afghanistan. As the Judge Advocate General of the Navy, Adm. Crawford led 2,400 judge advocates, enlisted, and civilian employees of the Navy’s global legal organization. He also was Lead Counsel for the principal military advisor to Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, the National Security Council, the Homeland Security Council, and Secretaries of Defense Robert M. Gates and Leon Panetta.
A North Carolina native, Admiral Crawford is a graduate of Belmont Abbey College and earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of North Carolina. He holds a Master of Law degree in Ocean and Coastal Law from the University of Miami, and a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. He was named an MIT Seminar XXI Fellow.
President Crawford has served on the Boards of Directors for the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, Lucy’s Hearth, the Church of the Nativity, and is on the Board of Trustees of Belmont Abbey College. He is an accomplished guest lecturer and keynote speaker and was the recipient of numerous military awards including two Distinguished Service Medals.
President Crawford is married to the former Elizabeth Ann Goncalo, and they have 14-year-old twin sons.
